Public & Street Work

Overview

Work inside the public right-of-way on a residential street in Brentwood. A trench was cut along the existing curb and gutter and a gravity line laid in SDR 35 PVC, formwork was set to grade against the roadway edge, and the surface was rebuilt in asphalt. The lane was closed under a cone and delineator taper for the duration, with the adjoining properties kept in use.

Scope of work

  • Trenching along the existing curb and gutter line
  • Gravity line laid in SDR 35 PVC to ASTM D-3034
  • Backfill against the existing concrete gutter
  • Formwork set to grade along the roadway edge, steel stakes capped
  • Asphalt surface rebuilt across the work
  • Lane closure under cone and delineator taper for the duration

Site challenge and execution

Trenching a roadway that had to stay open

The work sits in the roadway itself, along the gutter line of a residential street narrow enough that closing one side leaves a single running lane. Residents' vehicles and refuse collection use that street on a schedule the work could not interrupt.

Traffic control therefore runs for the duration of the work rather than being set and struck around each operation. A cone and delineator taper runs the length of the closure, the trench is held to one side of the crown, and the formed edge is staked clear of the running lane. Every steel stake along the run carries an orange cap.

Questions about work like this

Does EMAE & Sons install underground lines under a street?

Yes. EMAE & Sons Inc trenches and lays underground gravity lines within the public right-of-way, then reinstates the surface. On a residential street in Brentwood the firm cut a trench along the existing curb and gutter, laid the line in SDR 35 PVC, backfilled against the gutter and rebuilt the roadway in asphalt. The firm holds Class A General Engineering and is registered with the California Department of Industrial Relations.

Does a street have to be closed for work in the right-of-way?

EMAE & Sons Inc closes only the lane the work occupies and keeps the street running. On a residential street in Brentwood the firm ran a cone and delineator taper the length of the trench, kept the excavation to one side of the crown and staked the formed edge clear of the running lane, so residents and refuse collection used the street throughout.

What is SDR 35 PVC pipe used for?

EMAE & Sons Inc uses SDR 35 PVC pipe to ASTM D-3034 for gravity runs, which is pipe that carries flow on grade rather than under pressure. It is the standard material for gravity sewer and storm drain lines in California street work. The firm laid a gravity line in it on a right-of-way job in Brentwood.

Which cities does EMAE & Sons do street work in?

EMAE & Sons Inc is based in Thousand Oaks and carries out street and right-of-way work across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Completed examples include a sidewalk replacement in West Hollywood and right-of-way street work in Brentwood, and the firm holds California license #1107216, Class A, B and C-36.
